Jeff,
Nice to have you aboard on our forum, and I'm glad we can bring a piece of our and your model boating history back for you, and there is also no doubt that the performance with today's engine, our M5 Zenoah will make this boat much faster.
To answer your question about why we discontinued it is pretty simple. When our sales for a specific boat fall under 4-5 per month we had to look at if it was worth or not keeping product made to support that model. Today things are different catering direct to the public and I can afford to keep a specific limited inventory because our obligations are less. I have also spent the better part of 10 years making our products more standardized, or universal for use, so even though we have to do a couple custom proceedures to manufacture your boat, it is doable.
Now as far as racing these types of boats, I always thought it was a great idea because they were and still are popular in full size racing. These types of hydro's are basic renditions of the 2.5 to 5 litter inboard boats, many of them Pinto engine powered and very affordable for the average guy to race. In reality they are about 1/4 scale to the ful size boats between 16-20 feet in length. They run very similar and look great with a semi-scale driver placed in with Velcro, where you can see him bob and weave as the boat takes the natural shovel nose pounding. To get them in the racing field is up to you guys not me, God knows I have tried. It takes three boats to create a class, and if that's not good enough you guys speaking up on a vocal level until you get your way! Remember it's called a "club" and a club is a group not a dictatorship. If you don't like what your club represents or can't seem to convince them that new classes can and are in order to better and prolong the sport, then I suggest starting your own. I don't need to be convinced, I know what the outcome will be if we don't make changes, remember once and (not-so) long time ago there was model boating that was based on Nirto powered boats?
I will do what it takes to see that I can produce what it takes for you guys to compete on any level, and I would love to see our sport start to move into a more professional level with boats detailed like real boats, and drivers respecting each other because of the hard work and effort involved in making these types of boats and classes. I would love to dust the molds off and see this class develop as I thought would happen twenty years ago.The worst that can happen is we get better looking boats, better hobbiests, and keep the fun in gas model boating for years to come.
Thanks,
Tony C.
P.S.- The origonal intent was limitations to the engines to a max of 30cc, a cool paint job, (small town sponsors) and a Canister exhaust, that's it clean and simple and go race! My old friend Chris convinced me to make one for myself back a few years ago, as he had one himself done beautifully under the 1950's RCA logo and paint scheme. We were to do an episode and race each other on DIY TV, and we had a ball. If you can find the episode you can see how two of these detailed side by side can be so exciting. It was also Chris in his true form as he forced me into a giant patch of lilly pads where I was shreeding my way through with green flying everywhere, and on camera yells over, "What the Hell are you doing? Making salad"? He was like working with Tim Conway, I never knew what he would say or do next when the red light was on. After the first show together there was no scripting what so ever, if I had nothing to memorize or read I was safer, man I miss him.
Jeff,
I have 2 drop sponson "Old Style" Hydros...One is an Insane Hull w/ mod Z26...perfect size and great handling...
The 2nd is a bit larger "Miss Bardahl"...a bit larger and heavier...but fun to drive...
Nice thing about the Stingray, and the older style hydros, is that you really DRIVE them...lots of fun, and the Nostalgia Factor is Great...
Glad Tony's brought this one back!
This will probably be my next boat from WHH...want very much to have the Schweppes graphic, and everything looking like the real boat...
That's my weakpoint...where to get the original looking graphics...
What a superb boat though!
Post some photos, and ENJOY!!!
I'm Jealous...
